Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving from research labs into the everyday tools we depend on. Its success, however, hinges on more than technical performance. At Anthro-Tech’s webinar, Designing AI for Humans, experts from the public and private sectors shared a fundamental truth: if people don’t understand, trust, or see the value in an AI tool, they simply won’t use it.
Many organizations find that even sophisticated AI projects fail to gain traction. The reason is often a gap between what technology can do and what people actually need. So how can your team build AI products that are not just functional, but truly useful and trustworthy?
Here are three key lessons from our discussion for product teams, designers, and leaders:
1. Most AI Projects Fail From Bad UX, Not Bad Models
An AI model can be technically perfect but fail completely if the user experience is an afterthought. We’ve all encountered confusing chatbots or systems that feel unhelpful. This is a design problem, not a technology one. When people can’t see how a tool helps them, they walk away.
Designing AI for humans means shifting the focus from model capabilities to user goals. Success isn’t measured by technical accuracy alone, but by how well the solution integrates into people’s lives and solves a real problem. As our panelists noted, an accurate AI that no one uses is still a failure.
2. Traditional Development Processes Don’t Work For AI
Long product roadmaps and pixel-perfect mockups are ill-suited for the dynamic nature of AI development. AI-driven products are not programmed; they are trained on data. This requires a different approach, one that prioritizes rapid iteration and learning over isolated perfection.
Instead of spending months developing in a lab, effective teams:
- Launch early with a “thin slice” of functionality to test a core assumption
- Test with real, messy data in actual workflows, not with idealized use cases
- Iterate quickly based on user feedback and observed behaviors
This adaptive process reduces risk by revealing what works and what doesn't, faster. For example, one panelist shared how their government team invited their biggest critics to test an early prototype. By implementing feedback within days, they not only improved the product but also turned skeptics into champions.
3. Trust is Earned, Not Assumed
People don’t automatically trust technology. They trust organizations and systems that are designed to act in their best interest. Building trustworthy AI requires a foundation of responsiveness, foresight, transparency, and empathy.
Trust is also built proactively. One panelist drew a comparison to a bank’s fraud alert system, which blocks a suspicious transaction and notifies the user before harm occurs. What if government AI products worked the same way? Imagine receiving an AI-powered wildfire alert before a disaster spreads or a notification about benefit eligibility before a financial crisis hits. Trustworthy AI anticipates needs and protects the people it serves.
AI Only Works When It Works for People
The core message is clear: the technology will continue to evolve, but the foundation of great AI will always be human. Lasting success depends on starting with real user problems, launching early to learn constantly, and earning trust through transparent and responsive design.
